This is a complicated subject and one for which (intended) there is no simple answer. Let’s backtrack some. Salem was founded in 1626 by a man named Roger Conant and followers from the nearby peninsula settlement of Cape Ann.

The Cape Ann peninsula today offers great vacationing for people who like the outdoors. It has a beautiful state park, beaches, a museum in a castle and much more. Plus, it doesn’t have the unfortunate history of Salem.
Salem, Wherefor art thou, Salem?
Now, Salem was founded in 1626 and the witch trials began in February 1692 and ran for a year and a half. What happened during those 66 years that made the good people of Salem go bat crazy for 18 months?
We have to start with the Witchcraft Act of 1604 which was English law. In the colonies, a law called the Body of Liberties, was passed in 1641. This law cited three Old Testament statements that allowed for the court to execute anyone found hobnobbing with witchcraft.
The ethos of the time was also influenced by the strict Puritanism of Massachusetts Christians who believed in the intertwining of the physical and the spiritual. This is a good thing when it comes to marriage but it can lead to people being accused of being a witch on the basis of a hallucination that someone else had.

Salem Has Recovered from its Witch Trials
It took Salem quite some time to become just another normal American city. Today, tourists can get into the witching spirit in Salem. Glamma is already in Salem and Sunday, October 27 is a day full of Halloween activities.
They kick off early in the morning for the kids’ Broom Decorating activity. The brooms are ready for the kids to set their special spell on their brooms. The day continues with a psychic reading!
