Progressives fought for the right of women to vote.  This was finally achieved by the 19th amendment to the US constitution which passed in 1920.

The Progressive Movement fought for workers’ rights especially the right to organize into labor unions.  This has come to be seen as a general good although, as with many institutions, the labor movement became corrupted to the extent that today most American workers would choose to not be members of a union if they could make that decision.

The Progressive Movement was influenced by the pseudo-science of eugenics which claimed to be able to determine intelligence by the size and shape of an individual’s skull.  The upshot of the eugenics movement was that blacks and other people of color were considered to be inferior to whites.

Planned Parenthood began as a movement to provide contraceptives to women.  It was founded by Margaret Sanger who openly called for the reduction in the population of undesirables which, at that time, meant people of color, particularly blacks.

Perhaps the least successful aspect of the Progressive Movement was the desire for interventionist policies in world affairs.  The interventionist side of Progressivism led to the United States entering World War I in Europe.  President Woodrow Wilson said that the war was needed to “make the world safe for democracy”.  This notion led to the harsh Versailles Treaty which led to the rise of the Nazi party and ultimately to World war II.

Today, Progressives are open about their desire to rework the United States and the world under a socialist ideology.  That clearly divides people into two very different political camps.  Whichever side one is on politically, the term progressive has a much better connotation in the world of gaming!
