Thanksgiving is one of the most popular holidays in the U.S., which is quite understandable. After all, its rich history and tradition dates all the way back to the 16th century, during the Protestant Reformation in England.
English Protestants wanted to completely eliminate Church holidays, which would then be replaced with special days. Days of Fasting and Days of Thanksgiving marked occasions of divine providence. While disasters called for Days of Fasting, joyous occasions called for Days of Thanksgiving.
The tradition made its way to North America in the 17th century, carried out by English colonists. While it is difficult to precise the first Thanksgiving celebration in America, most historians agree on one particular date. In 1621, pilgrims and some members of the Wampanoag tribe gathered to celebrate their first successful harvest in the “New World”. The festival lasted for three days. Most historians believe that modern Thanksgiving celebrations follow the tradition set by the 1621 festivities.
It wasn’t until the 19th century, however, that Thanksgiving became an annual celebration. Sarah Josepha Hale campaigned for decades to turn Thanksgiving into a national holiday. In 1863, Abraham Lincoln proclaimed the national day of Thanksgiving, celebrated on the final Thursday of November.
Now, Thanksgiving is a highly anticipated day. After all, that’s the perfect occasion to gather all family members and enjoy a plentiful feast. Turkey is obviously a must, and has become synonymous with the holiday itself. But while turkey is the star of the show, we can’t leave out the other absolute classics like cranberry sauce, green bean casserole, mashed potatoes and pumpkin pie. We could really go on all day - and this list still wouldn’t be complete!
